CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte 7th-grader said she was forced to clean toilets in school as a punishment.
Mariah Brooks said she and others students weren’t in class on time at Quail Hollow Middle School.
A teacher told three of the girls that their punishment would be cleaning toilets. Brooks said they were given gloves and an apron, and cleaned both the girls and boys restrooms.
Her mother called the assistant principal.
“She said, ‘We are very aware that there were three children made to clean the restrooms,’” said Janice Bowman, Brooks’ mother. “But, again, she said the only thing I’m going to tell you is ‘I’m sorry.’”
CMS said it couldn’t talk about the situation specifically.
The district does have a discipline program in which students and parents can agree to a punishment that involves cleaning tables or picking up garbage.
But a spokeswoman said: “Cleaning toilets is not consistent with the application of ‘Logical Consequences.’ We are investigating the circumstances of this situation.”
